Have you ever fallen in love with a website? I’m not a man, and I’m not a website, but if I were, I’d fall in love with Becky Stern, of Sternlab.org. An org! Isn’t that so sweet? So uncorrupted. Anyway, Ms. Stern is doing some pretty amazing things over there. I spent quite a few minutes in a blissed-out daze watching her put her own hair into a doll’s scalp. I never knew this was something I wanted to know how to do! She’s painted CAPTHA screens
and knit outfits that you can wear to keep your laptop warm. She’s embroidered MRIs of her knee and made a plush model of her femur. Her use of old-fashioned handiwork techniques to add dimensions to various kind of modern technology is inspiring. I think that this kind of straddling of eras is related to the increased sense of nostalgia that seems so prevalent as we enter the second decade of our third millennium. Also, her stuff is just really cool.
