Is cursive writing obsolete?
I liked this little report on how people’s handwriting is getting suckier and suckier. Handwriting, is, of course, a subject in OBSOLETE.
I’m a little obsessed with how poor my own handwriting is. However, legible cursive isn’t something I’m going to miss as much as the character of handwriting as it relates to the writer. It can be as distinctive as a face. I’ve always been a little bit of a geek about what I write on and what I write with, because I see it at as an expression of myself—a viewable manifestation of something internal that maybe will never be expressed in any other way. Like this scrap of paper in my pocket from yesterday. It says Butter, carrots, TP, canola oil. Deep stuff.
But really, I should tell you something important: my handwriting sucks. Period. I think I could write the same letter five different ways in one single word. If I knew a word that had the same letter five times, that is. Thing is, even if it’s sloppy, it’s absolutely mine. It has personality. If it were a person, it would probably cuss a blue streak but would be fun to take to the movies.
This is a pretty typical page in my notebook:

Interested in hearing from you guys about how you feel about your own handwriting.
